Painful Hope: A Palestinian and an Israeli Share Stories of Transformation

Roots group photo

Ali Abu Awwad is a leading Palestinian activist teaching his people nonviolent resistance while reaching out to Jewish Israelis to forge relationships of mutual understanding.  He has traveled the world, telling his riveting story of activism, imprisonment, bereavement, and discovery of the path of nonviolent resistance.

Hanan Schlesinger is an Israeli Orthodox rabbi, interfaith educator, and passionate Zionist settler who has been profoundly transformed by his friendship with Ali.  His understanding of the Middle East conflict and of Zionism has been utterly complicated by the parallel universe Ali has introduced him to.

Ali and Hanan, together with other Palestinians and Israelis, have launched a joint grassroots initiative called ROOTS/JUDUR/SHORASHIM.  Its efforts to promote nonviolent social change are based on a piece of land in the West Bank owned by the Awwad family.

Join Ali and Hanan as they tell their personal stories and share their courageous peacebuilding work.  They come with no ready peace plans but with the conviction that human understanding and trust are the prerequisites for lasting justice, freedom, and peace in the tiny land they both call home.

The event is free and open to the public.
