After a recent two week tour of Peru, Professor Yahya Michot explores in a richly illustrated lecture the image of Muslims in the colonial and popular arts of the Andes. The transatlantic metamorphosis of Saint James the Apostle from Santiago ‘Matamoros’ – ‘the Killer of Moors’ – into Santiago ‘Mataindios’ – ‘the Killer of Indians’ – raises fascinating questions on the relation between Christianity and religious violence.
